Great Nepal Earthquake

April 25

2015

11:56 AM (NST)

A magnitude 7.8 earthquake struck Nepal, dubbed as the “Great Nepal Earthquake”, causing massive infrastructural damage and an internal crisis. Millions were displaced and affected by this tragedy, which is said to be the worst natural disaster the country has ever faced. Despite considerable international aid and assistance, much of the country- especially the rural areas- are still not attended to.

Almost 10,000 lives were taken, and nearly three times more people were injured. Nepal’s economy is estimated to have been pushed back by 10 years and the government declared an estimated cost of $7 billion for reconstruction and rehabilitation of the damage caused by the earthquake.  A year after this tragedy, tens of thousands are still left homeless, devastated and without enough assistance.

About Nepal

Images here are not taken from any website. They were taken by our project members and the local organisations we worked with.
Nepal is a landlocked country decorated by mother nature. The white stark mountains in the north, green hills and blue and emerald lakes in the hilly central region and the southern plains truly make this country one of a kind.

Nepal is also one of the poorest and least developed countries in the world, grappled by poverty and perpetual political crises. The government and country are poor, but Nepal is rich in its culture and its close-knit community. With a population of more than 31 million and 103 different ethnicities (census 2011), they make the country into a beautiful mosaic.

The people of Nepal are one of the most hospitable in the world - they regard their guest equivalent to the god itself and will treat them as such. The recent earthquake depicted perfectly the high moral values and strength of the Nepali people. In the face of their government’s incompetence (Reconstruction Consultation National Committee held its first meeting on January 2015) the people united and showed their love and strength for their fellow countrymen by helping each other out.

Nepal appreciates and expresses their gratitude to you for your help and support.

Introduction to Nepal Earthquake

Due to its geology and location, the Himalayan country, Nepal, is prone to natural disasters. Monsoon seasons regularly cause widespread destruction due to flooding and landslides. The country has experienced a major earthquake every few generations.

On Saturday, 25 April 2015 a 7.8 magnitude earthquake rocked the nation. It was followed by more than 300 aftershocks greater than magnitude 4.0.

Since the country has not faced a disaster of that scale for over 80 years, it was completely unprepared to handle it's devastating consequences.

Carry on Your Will
