ISAK's ProjectNEPAL: EQ relief through health and Education

About Project Lotus

ISAK's Project NEPAL choose the name for our newest project to be Project Lotus due to the symbolism of the lotus flower. In many cultures, including Nepalese culture, the Lotus represents rebirth and revitalization. ISAK's Project NEPAL hopes to achieve both of these qualities into rebuilding the Kihyun Primary School. Our organization hopes to rebuild the broken infrastructure of the school and revitalize the spirit of education at the school.

Current situation

The initial attention of the April 2015 earthquake brought to Nepal has now died down, leaving just Nepalese to deal with the long term issues in Nepal. One of these issues is the number of schools that have been left in a dilapidated condition and the lack of teachers that are sent to them. Much of this is due to inability of the government to keep track of schools in or out of use. Nepal needs more long term investments in the education of children in rural areas rather than just fixing schools in the short time.

Kihyun Primary School

The main goal in Project Lotus is to ensure that the project it has designed for project is something that is holistic as well as realistic. This will be done by interacting with the constituents the project effects ranging from the community to the students. To rebuild the crumbling buildings, Project Nepal is already in partnership with the NGO Pahar Trust which has experience in reconstructing and renovating over 100 school buildings in Nepal which have been kept up since renovation.

Partnership with Pahar Trust

While working on Project Lotus, Project Nepal made contact with Pahar Trust. Pahar Trust is an organization that aims to raise funds to improve education and health services to people living in remote areas of Nepal. Since its founding, Pahar Trust had rebuilt and constructed over 100 schools in Nepal. Due to ISAK's Project NEPAL's and Pahar Trust's  shared interest in this project, our two organizations have formed a partnership to support one another in this school project.

Goals and aims

Together Project Nepal and the Pahar Trust will collaborate and offer assistance to one another to give the Kihyun Primary School the facelift needs to be high functioning school. The specific goals in renovating the school are the following:
  1. Provide Kihyun Primary School with safe, and conducive spaces for learning
  2. Build an 8 room school building to provide make the school larger for more prospective students in the community
  3. Make sure the school has proper plumbing, so that students do not have to worry about access to water when they are learning
  4. Keep Kihyun running in the long term by making sure teachers are properly trained and the school is well furnished
  5. Set up Kihyun Primary School as an emergency shelter in case of another natural disaster in Nepal
